Are You Ready for CVSA’s Brake-Focused Inspection Week?
Attention all carriers! It’s time to make sure your trucks’ brake systems are good to go. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA’s) annual Brake Safety Week has been announced for August 23–29.
No matter the size of your fleet, owners, managers and operators everywhere would be wise to put some extra effort into brake system upkeep and upgrades over the next few weeks. A great first step to passing your inspection with flying colors is to browse the wide selection of brake shoe kits and other truck parts at one of the Nextran Truck Centers near you.
What Will Enforcement Officials Be Looking For?
When it comes to roadside inspections, checking brake system components is nothing new. However, since August is Brake Safety Awareness Month, inspectors will be particularly interested in brake hoses and tubing to make sure they are undamaged, flexible, properly connected and leak-free.
The goal of this month is to emphasize how important these components are to a truck’s overall mechanical fitness. And inspections are just one part of the awareness efforts. CVSA and law enforcement agencies will also be conducting various outreach activities to educate everyone from drivers to mechanics on the correct techniques for brake maintenance.
The 2019 Brake Safety Breakdown
Last year, 13.5% of all trucks inspected during Brake Safety Week had some type of brake-related violation resulting in the vehicle being placed out of service. And during 2019’s International Roadcheck inspection blitz, brake systems accounted for more than 45% of all out-of-service (OOS) violations. That’s why it’s critical to make sure your fleet’s brakes are in order by mid-August. Don’t be part of next year’s OOS statistics!
