It’s a challenging and rewarding field that offers plenty of opportunities for growth and advancement as well as a good salary, benefits and job security. Getting started can be exciting, and we can help you navigate the road ahead. Read on for more details on why truck driving is a good career, plus get helpful tips on how to become a truck driver with minimal experience.

Why Choose a Career In Truck Driving?

Being a truck driver is a great career for those who enjoy the independence of the open road. Commercial truck drivers are always in high demand, so finding work as a trucker can be easier than with other professions. It’s a stable career, too, which is perfect for those supporting a family as well as those who love traveling and seeing the country but don’t want to be tied to a desk. Drivers receive excellent pay and benefits, and depending on the type of driver you are (or if you’re an owner-operator), flexible schedules allow quality time with loved ones when needed most.

How to Get Started In Trucking

Taking the first steps to getting started with your truck driving career can be rewarding. If you think it might be for you, here are some helpful tips for how to get started in trucking.

Research the Field

Before making any decisions, it’s important to do your research and learn as much as you can about truck driving. Read articles. Talk with truck drivers. Speak with trucking companies. All of this will help you determine if it’s the right career for you.

Do You Qualify?

In order to become a truck driver, you must be at least either 18 years old (to drive within your state) or 21 years old (to drive across state lines). You must also have earned your GED or high school diploma, and you need to have a clean driving record with a valid driver’s license.

Obtain a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License)

If you meet the above qualifications, you can then begin training at a truck driving school to obtain a CDL, or commercial driver’s license. This training will prepare you for driving a heavy duty truck. At the end of your training, you’ll need to take and pass the CDL exam in order to obtain your license.

Find A Job

Once you’ve got your license, you’ll want to begin looking for CDL jobs. Many truck driving schools offer job placement assistance, working directly with trucking companies to place successful candidates into available trucking jobs. Take advantage of this assistance if offered.

Job Training

New truck drivers typically work with a company after earning their CDL. It allows time to gain experience, and it lets you learn the figurative rules of the trucking road. Once you’re hired on with a company, you’ll likely be required to complete job training before getting out on the open highway. During this training, you’ll get to know the vehicle(s) you’ll be driving as well as any company policies and other important details. After a few weeks of this, and potentially some supervised driving time, you’ll be ready to roll on your own!

A truck driving career is an extremely rewarding option and the field will only continue to grow, offering more opportunities to truckers around the country. If you think this is the career for you, get started today. You’ll be glad you got a jump start on a truly fulfilling career.
